There are bows that due to the nature of the grain of the wood behind the head, are destined to break at some point over their lifetime as seen in the picture. Fortunately, most of the time, your insurance will cover the cost of this repair. Although the bow will be greatly depreciated in value, the playability and sound of the bow will be preserved.

What to Expect:

The type of repair that will be done, in most cases, will be a "Head Spline." This is done by taking another piece of pernambuco and inserting it in the head of the bow perpendicular to the break in order to hold the two pieces together. There will be cosmetic evidence of the repair - this is unavoidable and actually desireable because a repair of this magnitude should not be hidden. Do to the high cost of this repair, it is usually only recommended on bows of greater value.
